The Power of Our Words and Thoughts

Our words and thoughts are so powerful that they create our reality. This is best illustrated by the research done by Dr. Masaru Emoto in his book titled, The Message in Water.

Dr. Emoto exposed water to positive words such as love, gratitude, and thank you, and also exposed water to negative words such as hate, evil, and “you fool.” He then froze the water and photographed the water crystals which formed, and viewed those crystals under a microscope. The water that was exposed to the positive words formed beautiful crystals, and the crystals of the water exposed to negativity were broken and incomplete.

Since our bodies are over 60% water, it’s important to consider how our emotions are impacting the water inside our cells all the time. Our emotions can keep us healthy or make us sick.

Fulfilling work, good relationships, and healthy food all play a role in a happy and healthy life.

Sitting in front of a computer for at least two hours per day causes eye strain.

It is recommended to take a five minute break for every hour of screen time. Screens also make us blink less, and blinking is necessary to moisturize the eyes. During your computer break, it is a good idea to blink as an exercise to lubricate the eyes. Blink repeatedly, fluttering the eyelids, until your eyes become moist. When the eyes are moistened, they can relax.

Try these two additional techniques to further maintain the health of your eyes:

1. We’ve all heard the expression, “I don’t have eyes behind my head,” but it is interesting to note that in the back of our heads there are two acupuncture points corresponding to our eyes, which are at eye level and help to improve our eyesight. With your thumbs in the hollows in the back of the head directly behind the eyes, press inward toward your eyes five times. This exercise can be done throughout the day.

2. Eye rotations are great to combat muscle tension. Rotate your eyes clockwise to the right twelve times and then counterclockwise to the left twelve times. Next, roll your eyes downward and then upward twelve times. Then roll eyes upward and downward diagonally from left to right and diagonally right to left twelve times. Finally, roll your eyes from side to side twelve times.

Many of us spend hours a day typing away on a computer keyboard, which can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. Here are two exercises you can do daily to ward off any carpal tunnel symptoms.

1) Bend your elbows, bring your hands up in the air to about head level, and rotate your wrists in circles. Circle first to the right and then to the left. Do this for a total of two minutes.

2) Clench your fists gently and then spread your fingers wide open. Repeat ten times.

These exercises are most helpful when repeated frequently through the day.

I bumped into an old acquaintance the other day. She looked great, and I barely recognized her. She had lost so much weight. She credited her great achievement to taking Tae Kwon Do classes, which she began a year and a half ago. She explained that Tae Kwon Do means the art of fist and foot, and it involves a lot of kicking. She loves the results of her newly flexible body and commented it’s a fabulous leg, waist, and butt workout.

She went on to tell me how the classes helped her with stress related to work and frustrations in general, and how she is so much happier these days. She also has more energy and feels stronger.

My friend was such an inspiration. I don’t need to lose weight, but who
couldn’t use a bit more flexibility and a firmer body?

I might just check out a class.

We all know antioxidants such as vitamin C and E have been touted as protection from free radicals-molecules that damage cells and tissue and contribute to disease.

Aerobic exercise contributes to the protection from free radicals as well, but recently I learnt that lifting weights is also a weapon against free radicals.

Researchers tested 62 people with an average age of 68. Those who lifted weights three times a week for six months showed a lower incidence of free radical damage.

The group that did no exercise had a 13% increase in damage, which is expected as you age, while the exercising group had an increase of only 2%.

It looks like it’s time for me to dust off my old weights.

We live in noisy cities, we use noisy appliances, we play with noisy games and blast loud music. All these activities take a toll on our hearing.

This aural assault can initially cause the loss of high-frequency hearing that’s registered by the sensory cells nearest our eardrums where they take the worst beatings. We don’t regenerate these cells, so once they’re gone, they don’t come back.

Noise can raise levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that can among other things, raise your blood pressure.

You might be surprised to learn that just 30 minutes of exposure to sound reaching 90 decibels – the range of some leaf blowers, lawn mowers and motorcycles, can irreversibly injure the sound-transmitting cells in your ears. The louder the sound, the less time it takes to do damage.

30 minutes or more exposure of the following can cause hearing loss:

  • 110 decibels – Concerts, Sports events, Car horn from 3 feet
  • 100 decibels – Train, Subway, Motorcycle, MP4 player at full volume
  • 90 decibels – Power tools, Blender, Blow dryer

Unlikely to cause hearing loss:

  • 80 decibels – Alarm clocks, garbage disposal
  • 80 decibels – MP4 player at three quarters volume
  • 80 decibels – Truck going 40 MPH from 50 feet
  • 70 decibels – Traffic and a vacuum cleaner

Solutions to Prevent Hearing Loss:

  • Shop for quieter appliances and run noisy appliances at different times
  • Use noise canceling headphones or ear plugs
  • Solid doors block more noise than hollow core ones
  • Carpeting, area rugs and draperies absorb noise. The thicker the better
  • Seal gaps with adhesive backed weather stripping around doors and windows

Wishing you a Happy New Year.  Here are a few simple tips to release the post holiday stress while supporting a stress free and fabulous 2017.
  1. When you come home from work, prepare a relaxing cup of chamomile tea.  In a dark room sip the tea with your legs elevated and absolutely no disturbances.  This ritual helps you to decompress from the day. Time permitting allow a few minutes sitting still with your eyes closed.  Then you’re good to go for your evening activities.
  2. Rag doll stretch – bend over forward as if you were going to touch your toes.  As your arms are hanging suspended in midair inhale and exhale to the count of 10.  Then, slowly come up. This exercise will make you feel relaxed and grounded.
  3. Self Shiatsu shoulder massage – Making a fist with your right hand, pound in an up and down motion along your shoulder blades in 3 different spots. Repeat 5-7 times. Then switch sides, using your left fist to pound your right shoulder.

A great de-stresser!  And this massage will make you feel more alert as well.
