We live in noisy cities, we use noisy appliances, we play with noisy games and blast loud music. All these activities take a toll on our hearing.

This aural assault can initially cause the loss of high-frequency hearing that’s registered by the sensory cells nearest our eardrums where they take the worst beatings. We don’t regenerate these cells, so once they’re gone, they don’t come back.

Noise can raise levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that can among other things, raise your blood pressure.

You might be surprised to learn that just 30 minutes of exposure to sound reaching 90 decibels – the range of some leaf blowers, lawn mowers and motorcycles, can irreversibly injure the sound-transmitting cells in your ears. The louder the sound, the less time it takes to do damage.

  • 80 decibels – Alarm clocks, garbage disposal
  • 80 decibels – MP4 player at three quarters volume
  • 80 decibels – Truck going 40 MPH from 50 feet
  • 70 decibels – Traffic and a vacuum cleaner

Solutions to Prevent Hearing Loss:

  • Shop for quieter appliances and run noisy appliances at different times
  • Use noise canceling headphones or ear plugs
  • Solid doors block more noise than hollow core ones
  • Carpeting, area rugs and draperies absorb noise. The thicker the better
  • Seal gaps with adhesive backed weather stripping around doors and windows

Wishing you a Happy New Year.  Here are a few simple tips to release the post holiday stress while supporting a stress free and fabulous 2017.
  1. When you come home from work, prepare a relaxing cup of chamomile tea.  In a dark room sip the tea with your legs elevated and absolutely no disturbances.  This ritual helps you to decompress from the day. Time permitting allow a few minutes sitting still with your eyes closed.  Then you’re good to go for your evening activities.
  2. Rag doll stretch – bend over forward as if you were going to touch your toes.  As your arms are hanging suspended in midair inhale and exhale to the count of 10.  Then, slowly come up. This exercise will make you feel relaxed and grounded.
  3. Self Shiatsu shoulder massage – Making a fist with your right hand, pound in an up and down motion along your shoulder blades in 3 different spots. Repeat 5-7 times. Then switch sides, using your left fist to pound your right shoulder.

Many of us suffer from insomnia; the inability to fall asleep easily, repeatedly waking up during the night, and difficulty falling back asleep. Since our body repairs itself at night, getting a good night’s sleep is imperative for good health.

Here are some natural solutions to combat insomnia:

1. It’s difficult to fall asleep if you are too wound up, so a few minutes of stretching will help remove stress from your body. End with a few slow, deep breaths.

2. Take a hot bath or even just a foot bath to relax. Dip your feet in hot water up to your ankles for at least 10 minutes. Foot baths draw blood away from the head, aiding sleep.

3. Don’t use TVs, computers, smartphones or backlit e-readers for 90 minutes before retiring. The blue light emitted by these devices suppresses the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin. A study at Harvard found that people who read from a screen before bed found it harder to wake up in the morning and feel alert, even when they slept for a sufficient amount of time.

4. Try an herbal remedy such as passion fruit (Passiflora incarnnata). It’s a relaxant and antispasmodic. Another choice is Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), which restores nervous system function and helps with sedation. Both can be purchased at a good health food store.

According to plant geneticist George L. Hosfield, Ph.D., “Beans are probably the best human plant food there is.” He explained to Reuters Health that beans are full of protein and fiber yet low in fat. They also contain important vitamins and minerals, such as folic acid, potassium and iron. “With the additional bonus of their antioxidants, you have almost the perfect food,” he said. Beans are loaded with soluble fiber and are an important source of two essential amino acids not found in cereal grains: lysine and threonine. Therefore, beans are the nutritional complement to whole grains; together they deliver a complete protein.

We all want to eat healthily, but most of us don’t have hours to spend in the kitchen. Especially in the warmer months, we’d rather not spend too long hovering over a hot stove. Here’s a summer dish that’s quick and light, yet still very satisfying. Enjoy!

Chickpea Couscous Salad

Ingredients:
1 cup canned chickpeas
1 cup uncooked whole wheat couscous
1 medium carrot
1 stalk celery
1 small onion
1 tablespoon tahini paste
1 – 1½ cups of water
2 tablespoons (approx.) olive oil
2 tablespoons (approx.) lemon juice
Pinch of sea salt

 

Cooking instructions:

  • In a 9-inch skillet or pot bring 1¾ cups of water to boil on a high flame. Add a pinch of sea salt and 1 tablespoon of tahini paste and stir. 
  • Add 1 cup of whole wheat couscous.
  • Dice the vegetables and add them to the skillet. 
  • Cover the skillet or pot.
  • On a low flame, cook the couscous for approximately 7-10 minutes. The couscous should be firm. 
  • Transfer the cooked couscous into a serving dish, add the chickpeas and mix.
  • For the dressing, mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, add sea salt to taste and mix. Pour over the salad.

With hectic schedules, deadlines, responsibilities and lack of sleep, who couldn’t use an extra boost of energy to get through the day? Try some of these quick, health-inducing and energizing foods:
  1. Eating oatmeal for breakfast helps stabilize blood sugar all day. As an added benefit, oatmeal is also rich in fiber and protein.
  2. Almonds are packed with magnesium, which helps convert sugar into energy. Their protein and fiber also provide sustained energy.
  3. Avocados are a satisfying and good source of healthy fat.
  4. Lentil soup is high in fiber and helps regulate blood sugar levels, and its selenium is mood-enhancing. 
  5. Kale contains protein, fiber and many minerals and antioxidants. It’s delicious sautéed in olive oil with garlic and a pinch of sea salt.
  6. Quinoa is a gluten-free grain which contains protein and amino acids for strong muscles.

Recipe for quinoa:

  • 1 cup quinoa
  • 1½ cups of water
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
In a 1-quart saucepan, bring the water to a boil with sea salt. Rinse quinoa thoroughly to clean and remove its bitter taste. Drain, then add to the boiling water. After it returns to a boil, lower the heat to simmer until the water is completely absorbed, approximately 15 minutes. Transfer to a serving bowl and use a fork to fluff the grains.

Pesto dressing for quinoa:

  • 4-5 leaves of fresh chopped basil
  • 2 large cloves chopped garlic
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pine nuts
  • ½ cup water
  • 2½ tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt or 2 tablespoons soy sauce
Blend all ingredients until smooth.

Ear Candling Therapy

Ear candling is an ancient and natural health remedy used to clear the ear canal of debris. It is a non-invasive treatment with many benefits, including:

  • Clears wax and debris from the ear canal to allow for better hearing
  • Relieves pressure from behind the eardrum
  • Eases earache, headache and sinus pressure
  • Clears nerve endings
  • Stimulates and detoxifies the lymphatic system
  • Sharpens mental functions, vision and hearing
  • Offers a relaxing experience

How does it work?

A hollow, cone-shaped candle made of 100% unbleached cotton (muslin) fabric coated with purified beeswax is used in ear candling treatment. The tapered end of the cone is gently placed in the ear and the other end is lit with a match. The heat from the low-burning flame creates a vacuum effect, drawing out wax and toxins. To ensure safety, before placing the cone in the ear, I cut a hole in the center of a paper plate, cover it with aluminum foil, slip the cone through the hole and then place the cone in my ear. The plate collects any residue from the burning candle. I also keep a bowl of water by my side in case it’s needed as the candle burns down and I then use it to extinguish the candle when the treatment is complete. You’ll hear a crackling sound created by the suction which has a very relaxing and soothing effect. The cone should be removed from the ear when it melts to approximately 2 inches from the plate. Then repeat the process on the other ear.

Are there any contraindications to having an ear candling session?

  • If you have a hole in your eardrum
  • If you have tubes in your ears
  • If have difficulty breathing or a condition like emphysema

Recently, I was instructing my dad in doing a session on me as my brother watched with curiosity. My brother then told us that he had been to the doctor a few weeks ago to remove the wax in his ear, paid $200, and the doctor had hurt him! I told him that next time I’ll remove his wax for free except for the $8.00-$12.00 the candles cost, depending on the brand.
