Flaxseeds are one of the most powerful plant foods on the planet, supporting heart, cellular, vascular, and blood sugar health. Research indicates flaxseeds are also beneficial for breast, colon, prostate, and lung health, among other benefits.
It is the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic and the lignan content in flaxseeds which appear to be primarily responsible for those health benefits. As if that wasn’t enough, flaxseeds also provide a good source of protein, antioxidants, and vitamins B1, B2, C, and E, as well as zinc, magnesium, and fiber. I was excited to learn that lignans also support healthy hormone metabolism and healthy normal cellular growth, while interfering with the growth and spread of unhealthy cells.
To take advantage of all these health-supportive properties, I sprinkle a tablespoon of flaxseeds on my morning oatmeal.
