Superfoods for Beautiful Skin

Avocados are filled with antioxidants and regenerative nutrients like vitamin C and vitamin E, which help protect the skin from damaging free radicals.

 

Vitamin C supports elastin and collagen production, while vitamin E works to soften and repair damaged skin.

 

In addition to eating avocados try the following avocado mask.

 

Mix equal parts mashed avocado and honey. Apply a thin layer to face. Leave on 15-20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. If needed, honey can be lightly heated to help spread more evenly.
The next superfood for beautiful skin are carrots. Carrots contain Vitamin A, a relative of anti-aging retinol which encourages production of new skin cells. Vitamin A helps slow down your skin’s aging process by decreasing collagen breakdown, resulting in less fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin A also strengthens your skin by promoting firmness, elasticity and youthful tone.
The same beta carotene that gives carrots their orange color can also brighten your skin and make it glow.
Skin products containing carrot seed oil is a great ingredient for reaping the benefits of carrots in your beauty routine.
My favorite skin oil which contains carrot seed oil is, Anti-Aging oil by Anne Marie.
The third excellent superfood source for your skin is the leafy green vegetable, kale. Kale is loaded with antioxidants, and is s strong source of fiber, calcium and iron. Kale is a great source of lutein and zeaxanthin, nutrients that absorb and neutralize the free radicals created by UV light.
This dark leafy green also helps to tighten pores, reduce dark under-eye circles, promotes collagen production, increase cell turnover, prevents free radical damage and detoxifies the skin.
Try kale as a side dish. I love kale sauteed with garlic in olive oil. Delicious!

Solutions To Destroying Viruses And Bacteria

Dear Friends,

A colleague of mine just sent me this YouTube video regarding Coronavirus which I would like to share with everyone. The link is, https://youtu.be/TfKmOeZbVV4.

Due to the current climate of the Coronavirus here are two of my personal do-it-yourself hand and home/office sanitizer recipes which kill viruses and bacteria.

In a 2oz. glass spray bottle add 2 drops of lavender essential oil. Fill the rest of the bottle with vodka and shake well to mix.

In another 2oz glass bottle add 1 drop of cinnamon bark essential oil and 1 drop clove bud oil. Fill the rest with vodka. Shake well. A few times a day give a spray or two into the room, especially if someone sneezes or coughs. Good to sanitize surfaces with as well.

As a safety precaution be careful not allow the oils to touch your face especially your eyes for it will sting.

For everyone’s safety, between clients I use a diffuser filled with cinnamon and clove oil to keep the atmosphere safe.

Also for everyone’s peace of mind, I am extra vigilant with my regular hygienic practice of proper hand washing, wiping down surfaces, the use of clean fresh sheets as well as using an air purifier. Also, for added protection I now wear a fresh mask during each face massage session.

Importance of Exfoliation

Our skin naturally sheds skin cells through a process called desquamation. This process occurs every 28-40 days on average, depending on your age. Exfoliation ensures that you remove these dead skin cells so your pores are clear and your skin texture remains smooth.

When we do not exfoliate enough, the buildup of dead skin cells can clog our pores, making our skin dull, causing breakouts and prevents our skin care products from working effectively.

If we over exfoliate, our skin can feel tight, rough and dehydrated. It can also lead to increased sensitivity and itchy patches.

It is important not to strip the natural hydration from the cells which haven’t turned over yet.

To exfoliate properly, apply a small amount of product to your fingertips and use light pressure. Exfoliation is recommended 1-2 times a week.

My favorite exfoliation product is, Sugar Face Polish from Fresh, since it is hydrating and smells yummy! I love that it contains real strawberry seeds.

Exfoliation is so important, therefore one of the main steps included in my face massage sessions is a natural exfoliation technique.

Combating Winter Dry Skin

We all experience dryer skin in the winter due to less moisture in the air, caused by cold climates and indoor heating. A good solution to combat dryness is using a humidifier.

Ultrasonic humidifiers produce a cool mist with ultrasonic vibration. I recommend the ultrasonic humidifiers versus other types of humidifiers since they are the quietest humidifiers on the market.

Humidity in your home should be between 30% and 50%. If the humidity is higher than 50% it can cause condensation on the walls, floors and other surfaces that trigger the growth of harmful bacteria, dust mites and mold.

The best way to test humidity levels in your house is with a hygrometer. This device, which looks like a thermometer, measures the amount of moisture in the air. Hygrometers can be purchased in hardware and department stores.

For safety, it’s important to clean humidifiers every 2-3 days since dirty water reservoirs can quickly breed bacteria and mold. Best to use distilled water for use in your humidifier to prevent mineral deposits from building up inside your humidifier that promote bacterial growth. Remove any mineral deposits or film from the tank or other parts of the humidifier with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, which is available at pharmacies.

My favorite humidifier brand is Boneco which can be found at Bed, Bath and Beyond and some hardware stores.

And remember drink lots of water to keep your skin plump and hydrated.

When we look good we feel better. Here are some tips for a flawless make-up application.

  1. Mix a drop of your face oil into your foundation for super dewy skin.
  2. Instead of dotting on concealer, it’s best to apply concealer in the shape of an upside-down triangle shape. The base of the upside-down triangle should be at your lash line while the tip of the triangle at the middle of your cheek. This technique helps not to draw attention to dark circles while helping to brighten up your whole face.
  3. Instead of purchasing fiber mascara, you can simply add face powder to your lashes between applying coats of mascara. Apply your first coat of mascara, and then use a cotton swab to apply the powder to your lashes. Then apply a second coat of mascara.

  1. The third eye point is located right between your eyebrows.  This point stimulates the pituitary gland.  The pituitary gland is the main endocrine gland which helps enhance the condition of the skin all over the body. Use your index finger to hold and slightly press for two minutes. 
  2. Another powerful point is located by the inner corner of the eye.  Place your index fingers in the inner corners of your eyes and hold and slightly press for two minutes.  These points help to relieve dark under eye circles.
  3. Lastly, there are two more common points located on both sides of each nostril.  Place your index fingers on the side of each nostril. Press and hold for two minutes. 

Stimulate these points daily. In a few weeks you should see improvements in your skin.

Spending long hours at a keyboard puts you at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis and other work-related upper extremity disorders (WRUEDs).

Researchers found that those who use more force than necessary when hitting the keys on the keyboard had the strongest symptoms of work-related upper extremity disorders. To lower your risk, lighten up.

Tips to help you lighten up:

  • Use the least amount of force needed for the keystrokes to register.
  • Be mindful when typing; post a reminder near your computer to type lightly.
  • Identify your “triggers”; you may tend to type harder when you’re tired, hurried or under stress.
  • Keep your wrists relaxed; neither flexed upwards or downwards.
  • Make sure your monitor is at eye level.

Our face is what we show the world. It indicates the life we are living. Our face shows signs of being tired, run down, stressed, sad or happy.

In addition to having face massages to counteract unwanted signs of aging and stress, try Laughter Yoga.

Laughter Yoga is when you spontaneously begin laughing for no apparent reason. When I first heard about it, it seemed silly but I had to try it. What I experienced after just 20 seconds of laughing was the following. I felt happier, I no longer felt upset by the upsetting incident prior to my laughing, I couldn’t erase the smile on my face and I wanted more.

It turns out there is some scientific veracity behind the old adage, “Laughter is the best Medicine”.

  • Laughter activates the body’s natural relaxation response. When you laugh there’s a contraction which increases blood flow and oxygenation. This stimulates the heart and lungs and triggers the release of endorphins that help you feel more relaxed both physically and emotionally.
  • Laughter boosts immunity. Neuropeptides are released when you are happy which help fight stress.

When we are young, keratin, collagen and elastin are abundant and give our skin its taught smooth texture.  Unfortunately, as we age these three proteins become less abundant leading to skin that sags and wrinkles.  Unlike the skin on the rest of our body the protective outer layer of the skin on our lips is naturally very thin and does not contain oil glands.  This has a negative effect on the skin surrounding the lips.  Therefore, as we age the lips become thinner and wrinkles tend to easily form around the mouth.

Here are some steps to care for your lips:

  • Use lip balm daily to keep lips moist. 
  • Stay well hydrated to prevent drying out of the lips.
  • Lipstick tends to be drying, especially matte lipstick. Search for a good moisturizing lipstick.
  • Having regular face massages helps to prevent and erase lines around your mouth.

In my signature face massage there is a step called, “smoothing out the wrinkles”.  This step addresses the lines around the mouth which are easily prone to wrinkles.

Natural Sunscreen Choices

Summer has finally arrived. It’s important to spend time in the sun to get a healthy dose of vitamin D, but you want to be careful not to overdo it. I recommend always wearing sunscreen on the face and neck to prevent wrinkles while allowing the rest of the body to be exposed to the sun for 15-20 minutes and then apply sunscreen to prevent over exposure to the sun.

There are so many sunscreen choices, it’s daunting. Unfortunately, many sunscreens contain toxic ingredients or endocrine disrupting chemicals, such as oxybenzone. Also the chemicals in sunscreen are known to destroy coral reefs in the ocean, another reason to avoid them.

Luckily, there are so many healthy alternatives. I recommend sunscreens containing zinc oxide. My favorite is Kabana Green Screen which is made from non-nano zinc oxide, which means the particles are not made so small. Nano-sized products are so small, and able to penetrate into the body and remain in the body, possibly causing health risks.

Some other brands to check out are Badger Mineral Sunscreen and Think Baby Safe Sunscreen.

No one likes brown spots on their skin, so here are two remedies to help lighten them. Choose either remedy below.

Lemon Juice Remedy
Dab fresh lemon juice directly on the spot twice a day. The lemon juice should be left on for at least 30 minutes or leave on overnight. 

If you apply the lemon juice during the day, make sure it dries before going outside since it can increase skin’s sensitivity to sunlight.

You should see an improvement in about 2 months.

Castor Oil Remedy
Massage castor oil into the skin for a minute until it is absorbed. 

Apply twice daily; once in the morning and once at night.

Results can be seen in 1 month.

The Power of Meditation

Neuroscientists, who have studied the brain of meditators, found that their pre-frontal cortex increases in size.

The pre-frontal cortex is responsible for memory, motor functions, problem solving, language, judgement, and social/sexual behavior.

I was amazed to learn that brain function will improve in as little as meditating 5 minutes a day. This results in more happiness, peace and a heightened awareness.

Meditation permanently rewires the brain, increases the body’s healthy hormones, lowers stress and improves brain function.

Massage has the same effect as meditation on the mind and body, but goes beyond since massage improves the health of our muscles, tendons, lymphatic system and more. Physical touch is necessary for our overall wellbeing. Physical touch helps us feel more connected to each other.

Since I’m a big advocate for mind and body healing, as well as offering massage, I offer a healing modality called, Access Bars.

Exfoliation Is The Key To Younger Looking Skin

As we age our rate of cell turnover decreases and our need for regular exfoliation increases. Exfoliation sloughs off dead skin cells and encourages new ones to generate.

By removing dead skin cells you derive more benefits from your skin products since exfoliation helps your skin absorb better your serums and moisturizers.

Exfoliation is recommended 2-3 times per week since the buildup of dead skin cells gives you a dull, sallow appearance. Exfoliation leaves you with a more polished and even complexion. Exfoliation is so important, that is why it is one of the major steps in my facelift massage treatments I offer my clients.

In between your facelift massage treatments, here is a do it yourself homemade exfoliation treatment:

  • Combine ingredients and add enough water to make a thick paste.
    • ¼ cup organic cornmeal 
    • ¼ cup grounded oats
  • Rub over face in small circular movements.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Follow with toner and moisturizer.
